Nearly all of Gaza’s higher education campuses have suffered destruction or damage since the state of Israel launched its Gaza genocide in October 2023. A comprehensive assessment by the Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, documented the complete destruction of 22 of Gaza’s 38 campuses and extensive damage across 14 others. Of 206 university buildings assessed, 195 were destroyed or severely damaged and rendered inoperable. The devastation has disabled 620 specialized laboratories and facilities, destroyed or severely damaged approximately 120,000 computers and 105 servers.
Dimitri Diliani, spokesperson for Fateh’s Reformist Democratic Faction, said: “The genocidal state of Israel is killing our scholars and destroying the institutions that carry Palestinian knowledge from one generation to the next. This is scholasticide, the systematic destruction of education through the killing of educators and students and the destruction of universities, laboratories, libraries and archives. It serves Israel’s program of ethnic cleansing by attacking our ability to educate, conduct research, rebuild and remain on our land.”
Diliani cited a January 2026 archive that documented more than 200 academic staff members killed, many in Israeli targeted attacks, along with the near total disruption of higher education for approximately 87,000 students.
Diliani cited the destruction of the Central Archives of Gaza Municipality, which contained more than 110,000 files documenting the city’s history, population, architecture, property rights and municipal life. On January 17, 2024, the genocidal Israeli army detonated hundreds of mines inside Al Israa University after occupying the campus for nearly 70 days. The explosion destroyed its colleges, training hospital, medical and engineering laboratories, media studios, the law college’s courtroom and a national museum containing more than 3,000 archaeological objects.
“The destruction of an archive erases the records through which our people defend their history, property and national rights,” Diliani said. “The demolition of a university strikes at our capacity to train doctors, engineers, lawyers, teachers and researchers. These war crimes form part of the genocidal state of Israel’s colonial program to sever Palestinian society from its accumulated knowledge and weaken our ability to sustain national life on our land.”
Diliani concluded: “We will rebuild our universities, preserve the work and names of our slain scholars, and secure Gaza’s intellectual future.”
