The genocidal state of Israel restricts access to the Israeli shekel, the currency commonly used in occupied Gaza, while its genocidal military destroys the banking system sustaining salaries, savings, aid and survival. This cash blockade is part of the state of Israel’s genocidal siege and serves its declared plans for ethnic cleansing.

Dimitri Diliani, Fateh Revolutionary Council member and spokesperson for Fateh’s Reformist Democratic Faction, said: “The genocidal state of Israel controls the entry of banknotes, blocks their circulation and physically destroys the institutions distributing them. The World Bank reported 43 of Gaza’s 56 bank branches totally destroyed, 12 partially damaged and its 94 ATMs inoperative.”

“Cash brokers charged commissions of up to 40%, consumer prices rose by 238% in the first year of the genocide and unemployment reached 78% last year. Israeli cash restrictions and the destruction of banking infrastructure blocked access to salaries and savings, deepened starvation and pushed daily life beyond endurance amid continuing genocide and while presenting ethnic cleansing as a ‘plan for free movement.’”

Fateh’s Reformist Democratic Faction affirms that unrestricted cash access, economic freedom and control over reconstruction are essential to our survival on our land. The genocidal state of Israel’s cash blockade and restrictions on food, movement and rebuilding must end to set the path towards ending the genocide.
